John Kitchens is entering his second year as Superintendent of the Fatima School District (Osage County R-III) in Missouri. He leads district operations, strategic planning, and community engagement with a focus on preparing students for future success. During a period of tightening school budgets, Kitchens has prioritized responsible spending reductions while continuing to expand real-world, career-connected, and postsecondary opportunities for students.

Under his leadership, Fatima has redesigned its high school schedule to provide more meaningful instructional time in each course. By reducing the number of classes students take each day, students will receive nearly 14 additional hours of instruction in each high school class compared with the previous year. At the same time, the district reduced its total annual instructional hours by approximately 60 hours, helping address teacher stress and burnout while preserving academic rigor. The district is also improving its school meal program through increased scratch cooking and a greater emphasis on fresh, nutritious, and high-quality foods.

Moving forward, the district will focus on building clear high school pathways for students planning to attend a traditional four-year college, pursue technical education, enter the military, or move directly into the workforce. Expanding real-world learning opportunities will help students discover their interests, build practical skills, and make informed decisions about life after graduation. Schools often focus heavily on helping students earn a diploma, but graduation should not be the final destination. High school is a launching pad, and our responsibility is to ensure each student leaves Fatima on the right trajectory to reach the future they envision. 

Kitchens holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Lincoln University, a Master of Education in Educational Administration from William Woods University, and an Education Specialist degree from Northwest Missouri State University. His previous leadership roles include Director of Data and Assessment for Hazelwood School District, Executive Director of Assessment and Accountability for Riverview Gardens School District, and Director of Science Curriculum and Assessment for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. He began his career as a high school science teacher and basketball coach at New Bloomfield. In addition to his professional roles, Kitchens is a husband, father, and proud grandfather. His leadership philosophy centers on transparency, student and parent engagement, community partnerships, data-informed decision-making, and continuous improvement.
